When temperature falls below freezing and there is water inside your engine or gear case, the result can be a cracked block or housing...and a repair bill that runs into the thousands. It's easy enough to prevent this unfortunate circumstance by putting your boats' engine to bed properly at the end of the season. Additionally, rust never sleeps which can allow corrosion to flourish during the off-season...a situation that is less dramatic but equally destructive. Proper winterization with non-toxic Marine anti-freeze prevents corrosion from establishing a foothold on idle components.
This is what you see with typical outside storage and ineffective winter covers.
Notice the buildup of ice, snow, and water from rain is caught in the top of the cover. This causes damage to the cover as well as the possibility of drainage into the boat and causes moisture damage and mildew. While covered storage helps keep the boat out of the direct impact of the elements, it is very much related to the design of the covered storage. Open sides and excessive roof height potentially allows the elements to blow in from the side and accumulate as above.
Your best protection for your boat is Shrink Wrapping

Here are the steps involved to Shrink Wrap your boat.
Start by creating the canopy for the shrink wrap to adhere to. Must be peaked to avoid possibility of snow, ice and standing water from collecting on cover.

Covers are vented to allow air circulation under the cover to avoid mildewing.

After plastic material is stretched over the sub-frame, it is heated with a specially designed heat gun to "shrink" the cover material into a taut, protective cover.

Project completed and stored in the open yard without concern for weathering, accumulation of moisture, or wind ripping. Boat can easily be removed from yard without waiting in line for inside storage removal.
Easy to see which boat does NOT have Shrink Wrap protection, isn't it?
